Portfolio Reflection
In Wellness and Fitness, I have grown in my ability to influence others to better their health. One learning endeavor that supported my growth is the Healthy Living Project. The purpose of this project was to reduce the risk of obesity in the DRSS community.
In order to complete this project, we were partnered up with one or two people that have the same period for bio and wellness. After that we would look at either 8th grade or 10th grade food diaries and take the data to pick a nutrient to focus on. Then we would pick what grade you wanted to focus on or you could even pick the teachers. Then we decide what activity we wanted to present to the grade, or teachers to focus on. After that we did a proposal presentation to try and get funded for the event. event to actually happen. Then if your event was funded you would then make a grocery list (with a budget of $15), and material list for Mrs. Tash and Mrs. Whitt. You would then get those two things approved and start forming your script for your activity presentation. At the end of the project, we created an activity for the ninth graders. The activity was a game about getting healthy foods from DG since it right next door and because mostly all the kids in STEM go to DG and get unhealthy food.
One artifact from this project is my power point presentation about the activity we presented. In this PowerPoint we took pictures of foods from DG and presented them to the ninth graders in a game. They then had to pick which one they thought was the healthiest. We did for four rounds, so the first round was one point, second round two points, and so on. Then after the game we talked about sugar, sodium and saturated fat. We then gave them a tiny plate of the healthy snacks from DG and the winning team got extra Fig Newton’s. Then they each went home with a card helping them to know what they need to look when trying to get healthy foods.
This artifact proves my growth because my group influenced the ninth graders to eat healthier when buying snacks from DG. Some of the snack the ninth graders would buy are Honey Buns, Sour Patch Kids, Air Heads, and Chocolate Bars. We did this by explaining to them that they are getting way too much sugar every day because on a daily average you should be getting only 37 grams of sugar. We also explained why having too much of the sugar is bad because if you have too much of the sugar it is all sent to the mitochondria at once and because of that it cannot use it all so it is then stored as fat.
Another artifact is the script that we used to get our event funded for the Healthy Living Presentation. We scripted everything we said in the presentation early so that we could practice before the presentation. We made sure that while practicing the script to also have classmates sit in as the ninth graders to see how well our directions were. In doing this we made revisions so that our script was the best it could be.
This artifact proves my growth statement by the script explaining the healthy options at Dollar General (DG) that the ninth graders have access to. For example we took three breakfast bar brands from Dollar General and had them choose what they think was the healthiest one. After they did that we would then tell them the correct answer, and then explain why it was the healthiest. We also gave the ninth graders a card to visit www.myplate.gov where they could record the food they eat to see how health they are eating.
